Type Locality and Naming

East-central Yunnan. The Heishantou Fm was named by the No.7 Team of No.2 Party of Geological Regional Survey, Yunnan Bureau of Geology in 1965. The type section is around Huangcaoling-Jiuzhai, Eshan County, Yunnan Province. But the Cunzhu-Fulianpeng section, Eshan County is regarded as its main reference section. It is the middle formation (4/7) of the Kunyang Gr.

Lithology and Thickness

The Heishantou Fm is composed of metamorphosed quartz sandstone, quartzite, siltstone and slate. It contains some hematite lenticules in the top. The thickness is recorded as 3152 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It is in conformable contact with the underlying Huangcaoling Fm

Upper contact

The top is overlain by the Fulianpeng Fm

Regional extent

East-central Yunnan. The Heishantou Fm is distributed around Eshan, Dongchuan, Luquan and Shiping.

Fossils

Microplants in middle- upper parts are Leiopsophosphaera, Trachysphaeridium, Dictyosphaera.


Age 

SHRIMP U-Pb date of 1032±9Ma was acquired from the Fulianpeng member at the top of the Heishantuo Formation (Zhang Chuanheng et al., 2007) [now classified as the Fulianpeng Fm that overlies the Heishantou Fm.] Schematic stratigraphic section assigns as middle Yuxian (middle Stenian) – 2nd of 5 formations put here in Yuxian.
